Let me get our of my serious SEO / SEM posts for a minute (if you can call the last post serious) and speak about my love of a movie.
Now I will fully admit my taste in movies is very different from the norm of whats popular. I love the movie “Congo“, I thought Nicolas Cage’s movie “The Wickerman” was fantastic & I still have to watch “Gleaming the Cube” every time its on T.V. - no matter how much my wife screams to have me change the channel.
“The Perfect Storm” was destined to be a mega hit - it had George Clooney & (Marky) Mark Wahlberg in it - who could ask for two better Actors to be in a movie together. The story was about a fishing boat; the Andrea Gale & its adventure fishing for sword fish in the Atlantic north east off the coast of Massachusetts.
So what does this have to do with search marketing? - nothing at all.
But there is a quote in the movie to which I have rewritten to apply to search marketers - a bit of a prayer for all of us in the daily battle of the SERPS. The quote is said two times in the movie once in the start of the flick by George Clooney’s character & one time in the end by a female captain mourning Georges being lost at sea. (if you didn’t see the movie and I just ruined it i apologize, but get with the times - it came out like 6 years ago.)
The quote (in a rustic fishing boat captain voice attempted by George Clooney)
“”The fog’s just lifting.
You throw off your bow line, throw off your stern.
You head out the South Channel…
…past Rocky Neck, Ten Pound Island…
…past Niles Pond, where I skated as a kid.
You blow your horn and wave to…
…the lighthouse keeper’s kid on Thatcher Island.
Then the birds show up.
Black-backs and herring gulls…
…big dump ducks.
The sun hits you.
You head north, open up to .
You’re steaming now.
The guys are busy, you’re in charge.
You know what? You’re a goddamn swordboat captain.
Is there anything better in the world?”"
Why yes George there is, i’m a goddamn search marketer.
By all means enjoy my version - and hopefully yours also…
“Your PPC budget just got approved,
you fire up your search campaign, fire up the site targeted
Head out to check how your ad looks live.
…Google looks good, CPC is still high but looks good….
…Yahoo is showing it at the top for 2/3rd’s less then google.
You yell at your computer….
…as it take 5 minutes for ad center to load your campaign.
You notice organics are showing up…
…shit keywords you never targeted for.
The conversions hit you,
You head to analytics to see who brought them in,
Google ain’t tell’n you yet - could be a few hours before she does.
The marketing campaign’s working, client is happy.
You know what? You’re a goddamn search marketer.
Is there anything better in the world?”
[…] the search engine marketer and the perfect storm… […]

I couldn’t believe what I was reading when that post came out. I am on the same page with you on this whole anti-wiki, no more page 1 organic listings, Google domination.
I have seen some “lenses” in the SERPS here and there but after the big G gave them the Squidoo slap they are far and few between (thx spammers)…like the Knol’s are gonna be safe from the darkside. Good post!
